To enrich the cultural landscape of Lemont by fostering the production and appreciation of the arts.
Ellen Vestergaard is an oil painter from Hinsdale, Illinois who finds her greatest inspiration in nature. After graduating from college in Colorado and returning to the Midwest, Ellen’s art stayed in the mountains, particularly Rocky Mountain National Park in Estes Park which she visits every year to paint the snow-covered mountains and tranquil lakes.
Ellen utilizes oil paints on linen panels with underpainting that she often allows to show through as a source of connection throughout the piece. Her use of a palette knife helps create a sense of energy while capturing the essence rather than the details of a scene.
Ellen’s greatest influences are the works of impressionists such as Van Gogh, Monet, and local artist James Swanson, who demonstrate a masterful sense of color and brushstroke. Vincent Van Gogh once provided inspiration for all artists when he stated, “If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.”
Ellen is a member of the Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, and the La Grange Art League. More of her works can be seen at the LaGrange Art League gallery and her website: http://www.ellenvestergaard.com.
